Website migration checklist
A migration includes more than copying files. Databases, email, scheduled tasks, SSL and DNS must also work in the new environment. Keep the old service until you have verified the replacement.
Record the existing setup
List domains, PHP version, extensions, storage usage and databases. If email is hosted elsewhere, record the MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records. Domain transfer and hosting migration are separate operations; moving a website does not require transferring its domain registration.
Back up and plan the transfer
Create current copies of the files and database. Keep backup archives outside publicly accessible website directories. For a site accepting orders or comments, arrange a maintenance window for the final database transfer. New writes on both servers can otherwise leave inconsistent data. If you need assistance, provide the source panel, data size and preferred time in a support ticket. Use the secure method recommended by support for access details.
Test before changing DNS
Copy the files and database to the new service and update the application database connection. Test through an available preview method or a temporary hosts entry on your own computer. A hosts entry affects only that computer; remove it afterwards. Check sign-in, forms, images, links and scheduled tasks.
Switch DNS and verify
Update the required A/AAAA records or nameservers using your service details. If changing nameservers, copy email and verification records into the new DNS zone as well. DNS caches can update at different times. Monitor traffic and error logs on both environments. Verify HTTPS and email before treating the migration as complete. Retain the previous DNS values and backups so that you can plan a rollback if necessary.
